Our Enterprise
Who can receive our plants?
Under our Memorandum of Understanding with DOC we grow firstly for planting on public conservation land, then for restoration of indigenous habitat for landowners with riparian strips for amenity, erosion control or it contributes to a wildlife corridor; subject to control of predators; stock being excluded from water bodies or the area of plantings by fencing; and/or water quality is likely to be enhanced.

Our activity
With more than 20 years experience behind us we now supply low-cost plants for habitat restoration to numerous community groups and trusts in Northland that do not have nurseries, which is just about all of them.
Formed in 2001, The Shadehouse initially grew plants for restoring Motupapa Island in the Kerikeri Inlet followed by Motukawanui Island in the Cavalli Islands. In 2001 we produced only 3,700 plants. Now about 18,000 plants of 60 species are produced each year with about the same number of people as at August 2022, a total of 365,000 native plants have been produced. Typically our plants are distributed to about 40 habitat restoration projects in Northland each year.
